So Amanda Bynes (of Nickelodeon quasi-fame) is having a hard time of things, and it’s getting kind of dark and messy. There are strange feuds happening, baseless accusations being hurled and a weird, defensive Twitter account updating itself near-constantly.
To recognize that things are unfortunate, though, is not the same as inviting unfortunate things into one’s own life. Though it might seem, on the surface, that there is one way to be sane and a near-infinite number of ways to be otherwise, the truth often approaches the reverse. Crazy has patterns. There are behaviors and signals that are common to the troubled and the unhinged, and it helps to recognize them.
Because as compassionate as we may want to be, picking up broken glass and repainting defaced walls are few people’s idea of a pleasant Sunday.
